Play Therapy
Play is how children discover and make sense of the world around them.
Child-centred play therapy is a form of counselling especially for children. Sometimes experiences happen before children have the language to describe them and at other times children find that they do not want to use words to describe their lived experience and feelings.
Play is a safe way for children to work through their issues and challenges, at a pace they can tolerate. It enables them to make sense of their memories, experiences, and feelings in a child friendly way.
Child-centred play therapy is available to children who are experiencing a wide range of social and emotional challenges. It is also a supportive therapeutic intervention for children who have experienced trauma, or been exposed to family violence, or situations that involve grief and loss.
Child-centred play therapy can also support children and young people who are impacted and confused by the changes resulting from the COVID19 pandemic, natural disasters and climate change concerns. It is particularly useful for those who are struggling to talk about these issues and make sense of the changes around them.
Counselling
Dr Sally offers a counselling approach that engages the body and mind as well as allowing for personal creativity and use of the senses.
The aim is to enable a deeper understanding of self and to explore thoughts, feelings, and challenges in an emotionally safe and therapeutic environment.
A creative and supportive counselling service is offered to:
- Young people
- Adults
- professionals who are working the therapeutic field and require their own inner work to support effective practice.
Authentic Moves – Dance-Movement Therapy
Dance has been fundamental to human life and culture since the time of our earliest ancestors. It is a vital form of self-expression and offers a medium of communication that does not rely on words alone.
When dancing, clients can explore thoughts and feelings in new ways as well as thoughtfully visualising desired future pathways. This therapeutic approach draws upon the elements of dance, movement systems, counselling and creativity to support emotional growth and enhanced wellbeing.
Prior dance experience is not necessary.
‘Sally you were the only person who did not ask me how I felt about what had happened…. and I had no words to describe how I felt. But when we danced, I learnt about my feelings, and then I learnt about myself’ – young client 15 years old
Individual sessions for adults, young people and children are available at Castlemaine Play therapy and small group sessions are offered from time to time.
Authentic Moves – Yoga Therapy
Yoga therapy at Castlemaine Play therapy is a self-empowering process to enhance their feelings of health and wellbeing.
This mindfulness based therapeutic service is undertaken within a warm, client-centred and supportive therapeutic relationship. The principles of yoga are used to explore client needs then a range of simple yoga practices that may include postures, breathing and mudras are defined to meet individual requirements.
In a yoga therapy session, the client will explore five dimensions:
- Physical body and cells
- Breath/mindfulness
- Thoughts
- Personality characteristics
- Heart and emotions
Prior yoga experience is not necessary – this is not a yoga class. Individual sessions are offered for adults, young people and children.
Authentic Moves – Professional Supervision
Professional supervision offers an opportunity for counsellors, therapists and educators to engage in 1:1 or small group sessions to reflect upon their professional practice.
This process provides an emotionally safe, reflective space for professionals to examine their own clinical work. It aims to enhance personal and professional growth, increase capability, and improve confidence.
Dr Sally is a registered clinical supervisor for counsellors/psychotherapists, play therapists and dance-movement therapists. She offers supervision that engages body and mind, ensuring a somatic and wholistic approach to thinking about and reflecting on practice.
Therapists in training, educators and seasoned therapeutic professionals are welcome to book a session.
